How many videos do you watch each day?

Everyone loves to watch videos and lots and lots of videos. And that is the main reason why YouTube is the most popular Website in the World Wide Web.

"People are watching hundreds of millions of videos a day on YouTube and uploading hundreds of thousands of videos daily," according to YouTube Fact Sheet.

But do video watchers view that many videos each day?

The answer is no. Not everyone watch a whole video, most video watchers will flip through the videos; the longer any particular video runs, the less likely they are to watch the whole thing. And these observations are supported by the video-tracking service people at TubeMogul.

Video Watchers Are Choosy

Just how much are people actually watching a video before they click away?

The survey:

In a posting on the TubeMogul blog, it publishes the results of a survey done recently for a sample of 188,055 videos, totaling 22,724,606 streams, on six of the top video sites for two weeks.

The report:

"Most videos, it turns out, steadily lose viewers once “play” is clicked, with an average 10.39% of viewers clicking away after ten seconds and 53.56% leaving after one minute,"says the folks at TubeMogul.

The answer:

  • Ten seconds into an average video clip, more than 10 percent of viewers have moved on.
  • By 20 seconds, almost 20 percent of the viewers have left.
  • At 30 seconds, one-third of the viewers have clicked away.
  • And by 60 seconds, more than half of viewers have bailed out.
  • By the 2-minute mark, more than three-thirds of the viewers have switched away.
  • Anything more than 5 minutes is a big achievement because more than 91 percent of viewers are gone by then.

So, the next time you make a video, please bear in mind the above statistical backdrop.
